Both Russia and Ukraine said on Friday that they had halted strikes on each other’s energy infrastructure, though differences emerged over the duration of the moratorium and uncertainty remained over the next steps in efforts to end the nearly four-year-old war.
The Kremlin said it had agreed to a request from U.S. President Donald Trump to stop strikes on energy targets in Kyiv until February 1, saying the move was intended to create “favourable conditions” for peace negotiations.
Trump said he had asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt attacks on the Ukrainian capital and nearby areas because of extreme cold weather.
At the same time, Putin’s special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, is due to travel to Miami today for meetings with members of President Trump’s administration.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia had carried out virtually no strikes over the past 24 hours.
However, he and Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said Moscow appeared to have shifted its approach, targeting logistical sites, particularly rail junctions.
