Pope Leo on Sunday appealed for dialogue and diplomacy amid what he described as the “winds of war” affecting the Middle East, Ukraine and other parts of the world.

Speaking in Rome’s Castel Gandolfo, the pope said conflicts were causing violence, terror and death while affecting many innocent people. “Let us not allow these winds to extinguish the flame of hope and peace, even when it seems fragile and wavering,” Pope Leo said.

He renewed his call for the continued pursuit of dialogue, encounter and diplomacy, saying they were the only paths capable of leading to a just and lasting peace based on mutual security and respect for human dignity.
