The U.S. launched attacks against Iran after earlier announcing that at least two U.S. military personnel had been killed in Jordan. With this the West Asia conflicts enters the ninth day.
The U.S. military also confirmed a third death in recent days, saying a service member was killed on Saturday in northern Iraq during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone.
The death of the service member on Saturday brought the number of U.S. service members killed since the war began to 17, while more than 420 have been wounded.
U.S. Central Command later said it had completed its latest wave of attacks, targeting Iranian military coastal surveillance and air defence facilities. Even before Saturday’s Iranian attacks, the U.S. had begun moving additional military assets to West Asia, including fighter jets.
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the strikes on Iran were “in honour” of American military personnel killed in Jordan and Iraq.
Iran said it targeted two U.S. bases in Kuwait in response to more than a week of intensifying attacks, including strikes on an under-construction nuclear power plant.
Meanwhile, U.S. allies in the region reported additional Iranian attacks on Sunday. Jordan also said it had intercepted missiles.
Israeli officials said the country was preparing to receive more U.S. aerial refuelling aircraft following the recent escalation and ahead of a possible expansion of U.S. military operations against Iran.
