The United States on Friday announced sanctions against Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, marking the first time the U.S. has directly targeted the head of the Cuban regime for alleged human rights abuses.
The U.S. State Department also imposed visa restrictions on several high-ranking Cuban officials, including Defense Minister Álvaro López Miera and Interior Minister Lázaro Alberto Álvarez Casas.
In a statement, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned the Cuban government for its continued repression of dissent and mismanagement of national resources.
He specifically cited the Cuban regime’s crackdown on the July 2021 mass protests, which were the largest public demonstrations on the island since the 1959 revolution.
