U.S. President Donald Trump is open to meeting his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts in Turkey, following the failure of talks on Monday to advance towards a ceasefire.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan proposed a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and U.S. President Donald Trump for a third round of negotiations later this month, to be held in either Istanbul or Ankara.
Ukraine reiterated on Monday its proposal to hold more talks before the end of June but maintains that only a direct meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin can resolve the numerous outstanding issues. Zelenskyy stated in an online news briefing that his delegation at the Istanbul talks presented a list of nearly 400 children they wanted Russia to return, but the Russian delegation agreed to work on returning only ten of them.
While Putin has so far declined such a meeting, Zelenskyy has expressed willingness, emphasizing that key issues can only be settled at the leaders’ level.
