In China, Typhoon Dolphin is set to make landfall on the eastern coast today, bringing torrential rains and powerful winds.
The storm has already battered Japan’s southern Okinawa prefecture, leaving six people injured and cutting power to more than 50,000 buildings.
Authorities in China have stepped up preparations, moving offshore workers to safety, sending vessels back to ports and increasing checks in flood- and landslide-prone areas.
The typhoon is expected to hit Zhejiang province and parts of Fujian with winds of up to 162 kilometres per hour.
Heavy rainfall is forecast across Zhejiang, Shanghai, Fujian, Jiangxi, Anhui and Jiangsu, raising concerns over flooding and landslides. China has activated emergency responses in several provinces and is closely monitoring rivers, reservoirs and mountainous regions.
