A senior Member of Paliament of UK has raised concerns in Parliament over rising violence against minorities and growing democratic uncertainty in Bangladesh ahead of upcoming national elections.

UK Conservative MP Bob Blackman called for a formal parliamentary statement on Bangladesh’s political situation, minority safety, and the electoral process, warning that conditions in the country are alarming.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Blackman stressed that the participation of all major political parties is essential for a credible and inclusive election.

He noted that the continued ban on the Awami League—despite its significant public support—undermines democratic legitimacy, describing the exclusion ahead of the February 12 polls as a negative signal for democracy.

The MP also highlighted reports of violence against Bangladesh’s Hindu community, including killings, arson attacks on homes and temples, and wider persecution of religious minorities, calling these serious violations of human rights and religious freedom.

He urged the British Foreign Secretary to outline concrete steps to safeguard minorities and support free, fair, and inclusive elections.
