Migrants attempting to leave Chile remain stranded at a border crossing in Arica as they seek passage into Peru, following a Chilean presidential frontrunner’s pledge to expel undocumented migrants.

On November 20, Chilean presidential candidate Jose Antonio warned that illegal migrants must leave in the coming months or face detention and expulsion once he assumes power.

His statement prompted the arrival of at least 100 foreigners, mostly Venezuelans, at the border, hoping to cross into Peru.

In response, Peruvian President Jose Jeri announced that the country will declare a state of emergency along its border with Chile.

He said the measure “will generate tranquility before the risk of migrants entering without authorization.”

Meanwhile, Chilean government authorities stated there would be no change in migration flows at the northern border, despite tensions arising from Peru’s decision to secure its border.
