Nigerians from various religious communities criticized US President Donald Trump’s threats of military intervention following the killings of Christians in the country.

Insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have caused widespread devastation in Nigeria for over 15 years, though their attacks have been mostly limited to the Northeast, a predominantly Muslim region.

The violence has resulted in high death tolls among farmers, with entire villages destroyed. In central Nigeria, conflicts between mostly Muslim herders and mainly Christian farmers over access to water and pasture have also been frequent, though they often receive less attention in local and international media.

Nigeria is located more than 2,000 miles from Djibouti, the site of the United States’ only permanent military base in Africa.

Experts note that the U.S. would require international consensus, additional resources, and time to gather intelligence before it could effectively target Islamist groups in the region.
