Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan has been sworn in as president amid an ongoing internet blackout following election protests. Opposition groups allege that hundreds were killed by security forces during the unrest.
According to the Tanzania Electoral Commission, Hassan won 98 percent of the vote. She took the oath of office before officials and foreign dignitaries at the State House in the capital Dodoma, in a ceremony held on the parade grounds rather than the usual stadium venue.
After sworn in Hassan said, “Thank you to all Tanzanians for your great faith in me and to the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) for your willingness to continue the work of serving our Nation.”
She further said, “The elections are over and now we return to the work of building our country. As we all know, the key pillar of our Nation’s success is peace. We will continue to focus on maintaining this key pillar, and we will never have any problem with anyone who tries to break it, because that will not be our colleague and that is not Tanzania.”
