Mali’s army and its allied forces reportedly surrendered the strategic northern military base of Camp Tessalit on Friday, marking a significant setback as armed rebel groups intensify their campaign against the country’s ruling junta.
Members of the Tuareg-dominated separatist group, the Azawad Liberation Front (ALF), claimed that troops and allied fighters at the heavily fortified “super-camp” had surrendered, drawing parallels with a similar takeover in Kidal.
The developments come as Tuareg separatists and jihadist groups present a rare coordinated front aimed at weakening Mali’s military-led government, which has been in power since 2020. The insurgents have also called on civilians to rise against the junta and push for the implementation of Sharia law, according to recent statements.
Al Qaeda-linked insurgents have issued calls for broader uprisings following a series of coordinated attacks across the country in recent days, further escalating instability in the region.
