Secretary-General António Guterres briefs reporters on the start of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. "UN week offers every possibility for dialogue and mediation. Every opportunity for forging solutions. Thousands of leaders’ meetings will take place. I will hold over 150 bilateral meetings myself. I will use every one of them to press leaders to contact each other, to speak directly with each other. To bridge divides. To reduce risks. To find solutions. To get serious," said the Secretary-General.

The United Nations has strongly condemned the coordinated terror attacks in Bamako and several other locations across Mali.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday denounced the “acts of violence” after jihadist groups and Tuareg rebels claimed responsibility for attacks targeting the army in the junta-ruled Sahel nation.

Guterres expressed solidarity with the people of Mali and emphasised the need to ensure the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure.

The development comes after the Al-Qaeda-linked group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin said it had joined forces with rebels to carry out one of the most complex attacks in recent years in the country.
