Peru’s National Elections Jury extended voting into Monday in parts of Lima, after disruptions prevented many voters from casting ballots.
Polling stations will open April 13, with voting from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time. The election authority extended restrictions in affected areas, keeping campaign advertising bans in place through Monday and prohibiting exit polls or early results until voting ends.
The announcement came after voting materials failed to reach 15 polling locations across Lima districts, leaving around 63,000 voters unable to vote. Peru’s presidential candidate Roberto Sanchez called for transparency and respect for the democratic process following widespread disruptions.
Serious fraud allegations were raised after electoral materials did not arrive at dozens of polling stations in Lima.
Electoral authorities rejected fraud allegations and said delays were due to late installation of voting booths and absent polling staff.
An early exit poll showed Fujimori leading with 16.6%, followed by Roberto Sánchez and Belmont. With no candidate near the 50% threshold needed to win outright, a second round on June 7 appears increasingly likely.
