U.S. Army Chief of Staff General Randy George has been asked to step down and take immediate retirement by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

George, an infantry officer with service in Iraq and Afghanistan, was confirmed as Army chief in 2023. The position typically carries a four-year term.

Before becoming the Army chief, George served as vice chief of the Army and earlier as senior military adviser to then-Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

His removal adds to recent leadership turmoils at the Pentagon, following last year’s firing of the previous chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force General C.Q. Brown, as well as the chief of naval operations and the Air Force vice chief of staff.
