Heavy rains have triggered devastating flash floods along the Guadalupe River in south-central Texas, claiming the lives of at least 24 people and leaving nearly two dozen girls unaccounted for as of Friday.
Among the missing are 23 to 25 girls who were attending an all-girls Christian summer camp situated on the banks of the rain-swollen Guadalupe River.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with emergency crews racing to reach those stranded by rising waters. By Friday night, emergency personnel had rescued or evacuated 237 individuals, including 167 rescued by helicopter.
The U.S. National Weather Service has issued a flash flood emergency for parts of Kerr County in the Texas Hill Country. With more rain expected in the region, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick warned of a continued risk of flash flooding extending from San Antonio to Waco over the next 24 to 48 hours.
U.S. President Donald Trump also expressed his concern over the devastation caused by the Texas floods, calling the situation “terrible” and “shocking.”
