Airline giant Qantas has suffered a major cyberattack that compromised the personal data of up to six million customers. It is one of Australia’s biggest cybersecurity breaches in recent years.
Hackers accessed a third-party system containing sensitive customer information, including names, email addresses, phone numbers, and dates of birth. However, Qantas confirmed that no credit card or passport data was exposed in the breach.
The airline stated that its flight operations were not affected and that the incident has been reported to Australia’s national cyber security coordinator.
This development comes shortly after the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation warned that the cybercrime group Scattered Spider has been actively targeting airlines. Hawaiian Airlines and Canada’s WestJet have already reported similar security breaches.
While Qantas has not attributed the attack to any specific group, concerns remain high. The incident also impacted investor sentiment, with Qantas’ share price falling 3.3% in mid-session trading, compared to a largely flat broader market.
