Germany has taken action against Chinese artificial intelligence app DeepSeek, calling on Apple and Google to remove it from their app stores over data protection violations.

The country’s Federal Commissioner for Data Protection has formally requested the tech giants to delist the app in Germany, alleging that DeepSeek illegally transfers user data to China and has failed to comply with European Union regulations on cross-border data transfers.

The commissioner said DeepSeek was issued a warning in May but did not rectify its practices, prompting Germany to escalate the matter. “The app does not meet the requirements of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), especially concerning the secure transfer of data outside the EU,” the office stated.

DeepSeek, a generative AI platform similar to ChatGPT, is already facing international scrutiny. The app has been banned in Italy, blocked from use on government devices in the Netherlands, and is currently under review in the United States.
