At least 14 people died in Fire Accident in a Kolkata Hotel

SIT has been constituted to probe the incident: Kolkata Police Commissioner

At least 14 people including a woman and 2 children died in a fire accident in Kolkata on 29 April, 2025. The incident happened when fire broke out in Rituraj Hotel in Mechhuapatti area in Central Kolkata.

The cause of the incident is yet to be found out. The Kolkata Police in a statement to PTI said, “The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.Our Forensic team will conduct an investigation of the building and it has been cordoned off.”

The fire broke out at approximately 7.30 pm. Nearly 88 guests were occupied in 42 rooms of the Hotel. After seeing the fire, lots of people from the hotel tried to jump and flee through the window. The firefighting continued for nearly 8 hours to contain it at 3.30 am.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma confirmed the casualties are 14. He stated that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today condoled the loss of lives in a fire mishap in Kolkata. He announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs. 50,000 to the injured.

The PMO India in post on X said:

“Anguished by the loss of lives due to a fire mishap in Kolkata. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon.

An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000: PM @narendramodi”
