The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that heavy monsoon rains will continue in most parts of the country over the next few days. A well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to keep the monsoon active across central India for the next four to five days.
It also said the southwest monsoon is likely to advance into the remaining parts of Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, along with parts of Gujarat and the north Arabian Sea over the next four days.
The weather department has forecast isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Konkan, Gujarat, Madhya Maharashtra, Saurashtra, Odisha and west Madhya Pradesh.
In Maharashtra, relentless rain in Mumbai and neighbouring areas caused waterlogging, traffic congestion and disruptions to local train services.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a holiday for schools and colleges after the IMD issued a red alert.
Red alerts have also been issued for parts of Maharashtra, Odisha, West Bengal and Kerala.
Heavy rainfall affected Punjab, while severe waterlogging was reported in Gujarat’s Junagadh.
In Kerala, rising river and dam levels prompted authorities to issue flood, landslide and sea erosion warnings.
Odisha and West Bengal remain on alert as the Bay of Bengal weather system is expected to intensify further, bringing widespread heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions.
