Farmers from the Western Cochabamba region of Bolivia, clashed with police on Wednesday, after arriving in La Paz to demand the end of President Rodrigo Paz Pereira’s Government, after weeks of civil unrest in the Andean nation.
Clashes erupted when protesters tried to enter Plaza Murillo, but were blocked by riot police. Some La Paz residents, frustrated by shortages, applauded police and shouted at demonstrators.
The march was part of a broader wave of unrest that has paralyzed much of the country since early May.
Former President Evo Morales led the march in Cochabamba and criticised the arrest of farmers’ leader Vicente Salazar, who is accused of organising blockades and the siege of La Paz.
Meanwhile, the United States backed the government of Rodrigo Paz, warning against destabilisation and supporting regional stability.
