U.S. forces deployed in conflict zones have reportedly been targeted using commercially available location data, raising concerns over the role of the global surveillance economy in modern warfare.
According to a letter shared by Ron Wyden, the U.S. Central Command received multiple threat reports indicating that adversaries may be exploiting commercial location data to track or surveil American personnel in operational areas.
Lawmakers warned that such data can reveal troop movements, congregation points, and behavioural patterns, information that could potentially be used to plan missile, drone, or roadside bomb attacks.
Calling the issue a major national security concern, Senator Wyden said the adtech industry must now be treated as a serious security threat.
