The United States and Iran could resume negotiations as early as next week in Islamabad, according to media reports. Both sides are working through mediators on a one-page, 14-point memorandum of understanding aimed at creating the framework for a month-long negotiating process to end the conflict.
The proposed draft covers Iran’s nuclear programme, efforts to reduce tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, and possible arrangements for transferring Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpiles to another country. However, several key issues remain unresolved.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said his administration was expecting a response from Iran regarding Washington’s proposal to end the ongoing West Asia war.
Speaking to reporters before leaving for a dinner at his golf course in Sterling, Virginia, Trump said he expected a response from Tehran “tonight.” When asked whether Iran might be intentionally delaying the process, Trump said he was unsure and added that the situation would become clear soon.
His remarks came after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington expected Iran’s response to a peace proposal aimed at ending the war and hoped it would be a “serious offer.”
