Sweden is set to overhaul its foreign intelligence architecture, with a new agency scheduled to become operational in January 2027.
Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard described the move as the largest intelligence reform in decades, driven by shifting global security conditions following the Russia–Ukraine conflict.
She said the reform reflects the need for stronger information capabilities and faster adaptation to advanced technical systems in today’s threat environment.
According to the minister, information superiority is now as critical as conventional military strength in addressing modern security challenges.
The new agency is expected to strengthen Sweden’s ability to respond to emerging geopolitical and technological threats.
