Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation Arsenio Dominguez said on Monday that no country has the right to blockade international straits used for global transit.

On the same day, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the U.S. Navy had begun blocking ships attempting to enter or leave the Strait of Hormuz after peace talks with Iran failed to yield an agreement.

Dominguez said that, as a rule maker and coordinator, the International Maritime Organisation has been working with member states and United Nations agencies to prevent escalation.

He also called for greater attention to the safety and lives of seafarers, noting that around 20,000 seafarers and 1,600 vessels remain stranded in the Strait of Hormuz.
