The U.S. military killed two people in a strike on an alleged drug-trafficking boat in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Monday, bringing the death toll of the contentious campaign to at least 170.
United States Southern Command, which oversees Washington’s forces in the region, said in a post on X that the vessel was transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the eastern Pacific and was engaged in drug-trafficking operations. The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump maintains that it is effectively at war with what it describes as “narco-terrorists” operating in Latin America.
However, it has provided no definitive evidence that the vessels being targeted are involved in drug trafficking, prompting heated debate over the legality of these operations.
