Kashmir Witnesses Snowfall, Tourists Throng on New Year

A weak Western Disturbance has affected Jammu and Kashmir, bringing light rain and snowfall to parts of north and central Kashmir ahead of New Year celebrations.

The Meteorological Department forecasted light to moderate rain or snow across most areas during the night of December 31 and January 1, with moderate to heavy snowfall likely in higher reaches.

Meanwhile, a large number of tourists have arrived in Kashmir to welcome New Year 2026, with Gulmarg witnessing nearly 100 per cent occupancy. The Tourism Department has announced a 14-day integrated skiing programme across Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Doodhpathri.

Director Tourism of Kashmir, Syed Qamar Sajad, said the department is focusing on strengthening infrastructure, employment and destination grooming to ensure sustainable tourism growth.
