According to a data by International Diabetes Federation approximately 589 million adults (20-79 years) are living with diabetes. It sounds further furious to hear that the total number of people living with diabetes is projected to rise to 853 million by 2050.

Today is World Diabetes Day. The theme of this year’s World Diabetes Day, “Diabetes across life stages,” recognizes that every person living with diabetes should have access to integrated care, supportive environments and policies that promote health, dignity and self-management.

This campaign of World Health Organisation (WHO) emphasizes the importance of a life-course approach to diabetes prevention, management and overall well-being.

Diabetes can impact people across all life stages, including childhood, the reproductive age, working age and older adulthood.

World Diabetes Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness about diabetes as a critical global public health issue. Join us in raising awareness, spreading knowledge and creating lasting change for all affected by diabetes.

Over 90% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes, which is driven by socio-economic, demographic, environmental, and genetic factors. The key contributors to the rise in type 2 diabetes include

# Urbanisation

# An ageing population

# Decreasing levels of physical activity

#Increasing overweight and obesity prevalence

However, it is possible to reduce the impact of diabetes by taking preventive measures for type 2 diabetes and providing early diagnosis and proper care for all types of diabetes. These measures can help people living with the condition avoid or delay complications.

Key messages from WHO on Diabetes are:

  1. Diabetes can affect people at every stage of life;
  2. From childhood to older age, diabetes prevention and care efforts must be integrated across life stages
  3. Supporting well-being and self-care empowers people with diabetes at every age.
