An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck Indonesia’s Central Papua province early Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The epicentre was located 28 kilometres south of Nabire, a town in Central Papua on the Indonesian side of the island it shares with Papua New Guinea.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported a slightly stronger magnitude of 6.5, revising it from an earlier estimate of 6.6.

Several public facilities sustained damage, but no casualties have been reported so far. The tremor startled residents, prompting many to rush outdoors.

Indonesia frequently experiences earthquakes due to its location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a hotspot for seismic activity.
