The death toll due to the flash floods in Nepal rose to 1,259 as more bodies were recovered from the affected areas, while thousands remain missing after more than a week of the disaster.

The United Nations has warned of the immense challenge of reaching Nepal flood survivors, with destroyed roads forcing aid workers to consider using cargo drones and porters to reach isolated Himalayan communities.

More than 800 foreigners from at least 34 countries are among those missing, including tourists and pilgrims, in both Nepal and Tibet in China.

From the air, the section of Nepal’s Trishuli River valley, where rescuers are trying to reach hundreds of workers trapped in hydroelectric power plants, emerges as an utterly desolate grey expanse.

Authorities estimate that some 900 people are trapped inside six hydropower plants.

Meanwhile, flood survivors in Nepal’s Rasuwa district face grief, displacement and uncertainty after torrents destroyed homes, roads and livelihoods.

Families continue searching for missing relatives while seeking shelter, food and medical aid.
