Achieving a historic milestone in the healthcare sector, Indian Railways successfully transported a live heart via the Vande Bharat Express for the first time. The heart was transported safely and on schedule from Surat to Ahmedabad on Train No. 20901 Mumbai Central–Gandhinagar Capital Vande Bharat Express. The transplant procedure will be carried out at the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre, Ahmedabad.
This highly sensitive and time-critical life-saving mission exemplified excellent coordination among Indian Railways, the Gujarat State Police, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), and medical teams.
A ‘Green Corridor’ was established by the RPF and Gujarat State Police to ensure the safe and seamless transport of the heart from Platform No. 1 of Ahmedabad Railway Station to the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre. This enabled the organ to reach the hospital within the stipulated timeframe, preventing any delay in the transplant process.
Ved Prakash, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Ahmedabad, said, “It is a moment of immense pride and satisfaction for Indian Railways that a live heart was transported safely and punctually from Surat to Ahmedabad via the Vande Bharat Express. In such life-saving missions, every moment counts. The excellent coordination among Indian Railways, the RPF, the Gujarat State Police, and medical teams made this mission a success. For us, playing a role in saving a human life is not merely a responsibility but a supreme duty of service and humanity.”
The speed, punctuality, and reliability of the Vande Bharat Express played a pivotal role in the success of this life-saving mission. This achievement demonstrates that Indian Railways is not limited to transporting passengers and freight; it also acts as a vital partner in emergency and life-saving healthcare services when the need arises. Various departments of Indian Railways, the RPF, the Gujarat State Police, medical professionals, organ transplant coordinators, and all concerned officials and staff played a vital role in the success of this historic mission. This challenging, life-saving operation was successfully concluded thanks to effective and swift coordination among all the agencies involved.
This historic achievement underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to saving human lives, alongside its provision of swift, safe, and reliable services.
