A special felicitation ceremony was held at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati, where Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma honoured mountaineer Rupamoni Gorh, the first woman from Assam to scale Mount Everest.
The Chief Minister presented her with a cheque for ₹10 lakh. Vanita Timungpi, who led Rupamoni’s Everest expedition, was also felicitated and presented with a cheque for ₹2 lakh. Both women are from Assam.
Dr Sarma said Rupamoni’s achievement was a matter of pride for Assam. He also announced that the road connecting Rupamoni’s residence to Lilabari would be named after her.
Rupamoni Gorh, a resident of Lilabari in Lakhimpur district, reached the summit of Mount Everest on May 21st this year as part of an all-women expedition team of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.
Speaking to the media, Rupamoni expressed happiness on becoming the first woman from Assam to summit Mount Everest. Her preparations began in 2024 with a basic mountaineering course, followed by an advanced course in 2025. As part of her pre-Everest training, she also climbed Mount Nun.
