Former Chief Minister Pu Lal Thanhawla said that the Mizoram Peace Accord between the MNF and the Government of India was the result of the collective efforts and aspirations of the Mizo people. On the occasion of Remna Ni (Peace Accord Day), Pu Lal Thanhawla said that peace in Mizoram was achieved through sustained efforts on many fronts.
He stressed that the Accord was not the achievement of any individual or organisation alone, but the outcome of contributions from political parties, the Church, voluntary organisations and, above all, the people of Mizoram, who longed for peace.
He said securing a lasting peace agreement was an extremely difficult task that demanded considerable sacrifice from all involved.
As part of that sacrifice, he recalled relinquishing the office of Chief Minister to facilitate the peace process. Pu Lal Thanhawla, the only Mizo leader to have served five terms as Chief Minister, was first elected to the post in 1984, at a time when Mizoram was still affected by insurgency.
In 1986, he stepped down as Chief Minister to enable MNF President Pu Laldenga to assume office, paving the way for the implementation of the Peace Accord and the restoration of lasting peace in the state.
