The flood situation in Assam has turned grim, affecting more than 45,000 people across five districts, with one person reported missing.
Rising waters continue to disrupt normal life in several affected areas.
Dhemaji remains the worst-hit district, with over 41,000 people affected, while Dibrugarh and Chirang are also reeling under inundated areas and swelling rivers.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said the administration is operating 12 relief camps and relief distribution centres across two districts, currently sheltering 655 displaced people.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the flood situation in Dhubri district has worsened as river levels continue to rise, with several rivers flowing above danger levels. He said alerts have been issued for riverbank and low-lying areas, while authorities are closely monitoring the situation and working on relief and rehabilitation measures.
In a post on social media platform X, Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote rivers including Gaurang, Tipkai, Champabati and Gangadhar are flowing above danger levels in Dhubri district.
He wrote the situation is due to a sudden surge of upstream floodwater across several villages near Jonai in Assam’s Dhemaji district, including Madhupur, Arun Chapori, Jamuguri Siyari, Uluwani, Majgaon and Malan.
“My team is on the ground and the safety of our people is our biggest priority right now. The damage and loss to livelihoods is extensive. We are parallelly working towards a comprehensive rehabilitation programme for those affected. The Government of Assam stands firmly with each and everyone battling this calamity,” he said.
