The Assam government has issued high alert following reports of extremely heavy rainfall and flash floods in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Subansiri district, which could impact several downstream districts in Assam.
According to weather authorities in Guwahati and Itanagar, Yazali in Lower Subansiri received 72.8 millimetres of rainfall in the last 24 hours, mostly occurring between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Wednesday (June 24, 2026).
The intense rainfall triggered flash floods and led to a sharp rise in river discharge in the upper catchment areas. Authorities reported flash flooding in the Panyor Lower Hydroelectric Project area, formerly known as the Ranganadi Hydroelectric Project.
As inflows increased suddenly, one spillway gate was opened to release excess water.
Reports from Yazali indicate that floodwaters, accompanied by debris flow, have damaged houses and infrastructure in the affected region.
In a statement issued by the Assam government, it has warned that continued heavy rainfall in the upper catchments could lead to a significant rise in water levels and flow velocity in the Brahmaputra and its tributaries.
The flood wave is expected to first affect Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath and Sonitpur districts before moving further downstream towards Dhubri over the next one to two days, the statement said.
The situation is being closely monitored by the state government. Acting on the directions of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Secretary has instructed all concerned authorities to remain on maximum alert and ensure preparedness for any eventuality.
District administrations in vulnerable areas have been directed to maintain constant vigilance and take timely preventive measures.
Meanwhile, teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other emergency agencies have been kept ready for deployment, while field officials continue to monitor river conditions and vulnerable locations.
