Meghalaya will now have an official state fish, with the State Cabinet declaring the chocolate mahseer, locally known as “Khasaw”, as the state fish.

Cabinet Minister and MDA spokesperson Wailadmiki Shylla said the Cabinet approved the proposal to notify ‘Neolissochilus Hexagonolepis’ as the state fish during its meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.

Shylla noted that Meghalaya was among the few states in the country without a designated state fish. He said the chocolate mahseer is widely found across the state’s rivers and the decision was taken to promote and conserve the species.
