After the eruption of fresh violence in the troubled state, Manipur, the Congress demanded a probe with time-bound justice.
Addressing a press conference today, Cogress MP from Manipur A Bimol Akoijam said that the Centre and the state governments had completely abdicated their responsibility in restoring peace and protecting the lives of people.
The party has submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister urging immediate government intervention, including time-bound probes and institutional reforms, following recent killings and continuing unrest in Manipur.
Akoijam cited the gruesome incident on the intervening night of April 6-7 at Tronglaobi village in Bishnupur district in which two children were killed and their mother injured, along with a separate firing incident at a CRPF post in Gelmon village that left three persons dead and several injured.
The party also flagged continuing violence in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts since February, including deaths and arson amid the closure of National Highway-202, the latest incident being the killing of a BSF jawan on April 10.
The party demanded a time-bound probe and completion of investigation into the Tronglaobi killings and bringing perpetrators to justice.
The party has sought immediate peace measures also. It urged the government to restore normalcy in Ukhrul and Kamjong, reopen NH-202, and address inter-community violence.
It sought strict action against armed groups and individuals involved in illegal activities.
The party also called for reorganisation and strengthening of Manipur Police as the primary institution responsible for maintaining law and order in the state. It flagged the administrative failure and erosion of effectiveness.
It urged the government to ensure safe access to citizens to their homes and essential services, including highways, airports, hospitals and educational institutions.
The Congress also sought immediate publication of findings of the inquiry commission instituted by the Centre on June 4, 2023 to look into the violence that began on May 3, 2023.
It demanded adequate financial and material relief for victims of violence, formulation of policies to mitigate economic fallout of prolonged unrest, initiation of dialogue and consultations with stakeholders to restore normalcy in Manipur.
The party also demanded deferment of census and delimitation until law and order improves and a judicious process is undertaken under the Citizenship Act, 1955 to identify citizens and non-citizens.
It also demanded the setting up of ‘Foreigners Tribunal’, under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025 to address illegal immigration.
