The Meghalaya Cabinet approved the Meghalaya Official Languages Ordinance, 2026, granting official status to Khasi and Garo alongside English, replacing the 2005 Act.

The move allows their use in government communication, Assembly debates, and future examinations.

Led by Conrad K Sangma, the decision aims to strengthen indigenous languages and support their inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, with implementation to be carried out gradually.
