India’s school education system is set for a major technology upgrade, with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) introducing computational thinking and artificial intelligence (AI) for students from Classes 3 to 8 from the beginning of the academic year.
Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, along with Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and Minister of State for Education, Jayant Chaudhary, launched the AI & Computational Thinking curriculum on Wednesday in New Delhi.
The new curriculum will roll out in the 2026–27 academic session, aiming to develop digital and analytical skills from an early age.
In his address Pradhan said AI can transform education, making it more inclusive, accessible, and equitable. The initiative focuses on student-centric learning, tailoring education to individual needs and improving outcomes across diverse classrooms.
For middle school students, the curriculum will cover data literacy, logical reasoning, basic statistics, and AI ethics. The aim is to prepare India’s next generation not just to use technology, but to understand and shape it.
