Chronic knee pain isn’t just a physical discomfort, it gradually erodes mobility, independence, and overall quality of life in patients. Delayed diagnosis or postponing surgery can often result in years of restricted movement, difficulty performing even routine physical activities such as walking or climbing stairs. Bringing renewed hope to these patients, Fortis Hospital Manesar has introduced world-class MAKO Robotic-Arm Assisted Knee Replacement – a first in the region, offering a highly precise and personalized surgical solution that helps patients regain mobility and return to daily routine after long periods of debilitating pain.

The advanced MAKO technology integrates advanced 3D CT-based pre-surgical planning with robotic-arm assistance, enabling surgeons to customise each procedure to the patient’s unique anatomy. This improves implant accuracy, preserve healthy bone and soft tissues, reduce post-operative discomfort, and promote faster recovery compared with conventional knee replacement techniques.

Fortis Manesar has already successfully treated several patients suffering from complex knee ailments using the MAKO system in recent days.

In a first such case, Asha Deswal, 68-year old Asha Deswal, who suffered from advanced osteoarthritis in both knees underwent a bilateral robotic total knee replacement. Ms Deshwal is now able to stand and walk with support, that too within six hours of surgery.

Today, she can walk comfortably, can limb stairs confidently, and independently can manages her household – reclaiming a life once overshadowed by pain.

In second such case, Neelam Bhayana, who endured knee pain for nearly 15 years, had gradually lost her independence. After undergoing bilateral robotic knee replacement, 69-year old Bhayana now walks without fear of pain, actively participates in family gatherings, and enjoys an independent daily routine once again.

Similarly, 69-year old Radhiya Devi, who had severe knee pain in both legs for years, stood up within 24 hours of her bilateral robotic knee replacement surgery. She now manages her daily life with confidence and independence.

For 61-year old Santosh, three years of severe knee pain had restricted even simple movements. Post robotic surgery, she now walks comfortably, climbs stairs with ease, and has regained both confidence and mobility.

The most success story was of 74-year old Prem Chand Pahwa, who was unable to walk straight due to a severe bow-leg deformity caused by advanced osteoarthritis. After undergoing robotic total knee replacement using the MAKO system at Fortis Manesar, his deformity was corrected – allowing him to walk upright again with significantly reduced pain, restoring not just mobility, but dignity and self-assurance.

Dr. Rohit Lamba, Director – Orthopaedics, Fortis Hospital Manesar, said, “India is facing a growing public-health challenge of osteoporosis and bone degeneration, contributing to poor bone strength, fragility fractures, and reduced quality of life, often much earlier than in Western populations. Studies indicate that osteoporosis and low bone mineral density affect a significant proportion of Indians, particularly women, and bone loss may occur at younger ages due to widespread nutritional deficiencies, lifestyle changes, and aging populations.’

“In this context, robotic-assisted joint replacement has emerged as a major breakthrough in orthopaedic surgery. With the MAKO Robotic-Arm Assisted Technology, surgeons are able to plan every procedure based on the patient’s unique anatomy using advanced 3D imaging and then execute it with exceptional precision”, he added.

Abhijit Singh, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital Manesar, said, “By becoming the first hospital in the region to offer MAKO Robotic-Arm Assisted knee replacement, Fortis Manesar is ensuring that elderly patients no longer need to travel to Delhi or other metro cities for advanced joint care. World-class robotic orthopaedic treatment is now available closer to home -near family, familiarity, and vital support systems.”
