In Bangladesh, newly elected lawmakers are set to be sworn in on 17 February, following the landslide victory of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the parliamentary election.
After the swearing-in, the parliamentary party commanding the majority will hold a meeting to elect its leader. The elected leader will then call on the President to formally stake claim to form the government.
The President will first administer the oath to the Prime Minister, followed by ministers, state ministers, and deputy ministers. The Cabinet Division will subsequently issue a gazette notification allocating portfolios.
The BNP won 209 seats in Thursday’s parliamentary election, held alongside a referendum. At a post-election press conference in Dhaka, Tarique Rahman said that maintaining peace and law-and-order would be the top priority of the new government.
Another BNP leader said invitations will be extended to about a dozen regional heads of government including Narendra Modi to attend the swearing-in ceremony.
