Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged compensation to Azerbaijan for Russia’s role in accidentally downing an Azerbaijani passenger plane in 2024.

Putin made the assurance during a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on Thursday—10 months after the crash that killed 38 of the 67 people on board.

The Azerbaijani Airlines plane went down over Russian territory after Russian air defences were activated in response to Ukrainian drone activity.

Putin had issued a rare public apology to Aliyev last year, calling it a “tragic incident.” The Kremlin has since maintained that the crash was accidental.
