In a show of strong maritime cooperation, the Japan Coast Guard ship Itsukushima arrived at Chennai Port today as part of its Global Ocean Voyage Training. The visit underscores the enduring partnership between the Indian Coast Guard and Japan Coast Guard, enhancing strategic ties and interoperability in the Indo-Pacific region.
In a warm traditional ceremony, the Itsukushima, commanded by Captain Naoki Mizoguchi, was welcomed with Indian cultural honors. During its week-long stay, the crew will engage in official visits, reciprocal ship tours, joint training, and cultural exchanges to deepen mutual understanding and cooperation between the two maritime forces.
In a series of high-level meetings, the JCG delegation led by Vice Admiral Hiroaki Kaosue will hold discussions with Indian Coast Guard Director General Paramesh Sivamani and Additional Director General Donny Michael. These talks aim to strengthen bilateral maritime cooperation and operational coordination along India’s eastern seaboard.
In a joint exercise named Exercise Jaa Mata, the Itsukushima will collaborate with the Indian Coast Guard to enhance sea operational synergy. Additionally, four Indian officers will embark on Itsukushima as Sea Riders en route to Singapore, fostering camaraderie and professional exchange between the two forces.
In a testament to their shared vision, the visit reflects the partnership rooted in the 2006 Memorandum of Cooperation. Both nations reaffirm commitment to a Free, Open, and Inclusive Indo-Pacific aligned with India’s SAGAR initiative and the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, promoting peace and security in the region.
