U.S. is constructing a new 11-kilometer taller “secondary” barrier to reinforce the existing steel mesh fence in the desert area of southern New Mexico, along the border with Mexico.
In total, approximately 58 kilometers of new border wall will be built across Arizona and New Mexico.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency stated that these projects aim to close critical gaps in the border wall and improve border security operations.
The steel mesh fence construction has already contributed to a decline in migrant crossings, with Border Patrol arresting over 39,000 migrants in the El Paso sector during the fiscal year ending in April, representing a 78% drop compared to the previous year.
