An Indian film ‘Baksho Bondi’ (Shadowbox) got official entry for International Berlin Festival (Berlinale) this year in Germany. The Bengali/Hindi film is directed by Tanushree Das and Saumyananda Sahi and produced by Moonweave Films and Kiterabbit Films.
Tillotama Shome (Maya in the film) is in the lead role and supported by Chandan Bisht, Sayan Karmakar and Suman Saha. Music Directors are Benedict Taylor, Naren Chandavarkar.
Maya lives with her husband Sundar and their teenage son Debu in a dusty Kolkata suburb. She does several jobs: she cleans houses, works on a chicken farm and irons laundry. Sundar, an ex-soldier who suffers from mental health, is the laughingstock of the neighbourhood.
Debu is often left to care for his father and is torn between embarrassment and affection for him. Maya receives little support from her own family during this difficult time: they were all opposed to her marriage to Sundar, considering him to be an outsider.
Maya tries to coax Sundar into finding a job but he resists. Late one night, she wakes up to find him gone. While searching for her husband, Maya discovers he is a suspect in a murder investigation. When Sundar secretly returns home a few days later, hungry and terrified, the couple’s relationship and the family’s unity are put to the greatest test.
Both Das and Sahi are the products of prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, have graduated in Editing and Cinematography respectively.
After involved in many acclaimed film projects which got numerous awards in film festivals around the world, this is their directorial debut.
Before diving into film making, Tanushree Das studied English literature at the University of Calcutta and Saumyananda Sahi studied philosophy at St. Stephen’s College in Delhi.
The ‘Berlinale’ Festival starts from 13-23 February 2025 and the tickets will be available online from 10 February 2025.
