Europe faces fifth heatwave of summer with severe wildfires

Europe is battling through its fifth heatwave this summer that has already spurred wildfires of rare ferocity. Continent faces more sweltering conditions and worsening droughts, with thousands forced to flee their homes.

In Germany, Some 500 firefighters and troops are battling the blaze that has sent a huge cloud of black smoke across the region into neighbouring Germany and France.

Anger over the official response to Europe’s summer of fires boiled over when French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu was jeered as he visited a village devastated by a forest inferno.

Prime Minister Lecornu insisted that the govt has absolutely nothing to hide regarding its wildfire management response.  Prime Minsiter Lecornu also pledged €12 million in aid for Gironde and Landes.

Germany’s defence ministry said on Monday that two military water-bombing helicopters would be sent to Belgium.

The German town of Monschau, close to the border, ordered nearly 30 people living in two streets near the frontier to evacuate.

In Greece, two fires on the island of Salamis near Athens that claimed two lives and led to the evacuation of nearly 600 people have been largely extinguished.

Thirty-six blazes have broken out over the past 24 hours around the country.

Greece is also on high alert as severe winds across parts of the nation have raised the risk of fires breaking out.

However in Belgium, much-needed rain brought some respite on Monday to firefighters on their fourth day battling country’s worst wildfire in a century.

Frefighters termed wildfires as the “biggest ecological catastrophe” for Belgium.

While in Britian, Around 200 British military personnel were deployed to South Wales following a request from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) for logistical, operational and planning support as crews tackled ten large fires across the region.
