Italy issued red alerts in 25 cities on August 3, as heatwave pushed temperatures close to 40°C. Forecasters said that the heatwave will likely continue until Friday, August 7.

Italy is among several European countries facing extreme summer temperatures, with scientists warning that heatwaves are becoming more frequent as Europe warms faster than any other continent.

Tourists at Rome’s Colosseum used umbrellas, fans and water-bottles to cope, while many sought shade and cooled-off at public fountains.
