Taiwan has stepped up coast guard patrols in response to China’s expanding maritime presence east of the self-ruled island, as Beijing signals its intent to make the deployments permanent.

Ocean Affairs Deputy Minister Sung Chen-en said the island would ensure China “never succeeds” in establishing control over the waters. He accused Beijing of attempting to normalise its law enforcement activities in the area.

The move comes amid rising tensions across the Taiwan Strait, with Taipei closely monitoring China’s increasing maritime operations.
