India was represented by the Governor of Bihar, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain, and the Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, at the funeral ceremony of the late Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ali Khamenei at a farewell ceremony in Tehran.
The delegation conveyed its respects on behalf of the Government and the people of India. The high-level representation at the ceremony underscores the importance of civilizational ties, including people-to-people connections between the two countries, providing a robust foundation for political and economic engagement.
Senior officials from various countries, including Russia, Qatar, and Oman, paid tribute to Iran’s slain Supreme Leader.
Khamenei’s body lay in state in a vast hall in the Iranian capital as foreign dignitaries, clerics, government officials, and other mourners filed past his coffin to pay their respects.
Khamenei’s body was expected to be taken to Qom, Najaf, and Karbala—the great Shi’ite centres of Iran and Iraq—before being laid to rest on 9 July in Mashhad, home to the country’s holiest.
