Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract Party secured victory in parliamentary elections with 49.8% of the vote, preliminary results showed on June 8.
The win is seen as strong public endorsement of his pro-Western foreign policy shift away from the Russian influence.
Pashinyan pledged to pursue closer EU and US ties, while maintaining balanced relations with Moscow. He also called for peace with Azerbaijan.
The opposition Strong Armenia alliance trailed at 23.3%. European leaders, including France’s Macron, have congratulated him on the result.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the party’s victory.
