The Telangana government launched the “Thread Pochampally” Handloom Exhibition yesterday at HITEX, Hyderabad, as part of the “Telangana Rising” programme. The exhibition was inaugurated by Agriculture and Handloom Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao and Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy.
Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao said that Pochampally Ikat handloom art is recognised worldwide. He noted that the GI tag received in 2003 is proof of the skill of the weavers here.
He also said that the government has spent more than Rs. 1,400 crore in the last two and a half years for the development of the handloom sector.
He assured that the government will always support the weavers. He added that the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT) has been set up to provide modern designs and new technology training to weavers.
Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy praised the weavers of Pochampally, who amazed the world by weaving sarees so thin that they can fit inside a matchbox, earning the town the title of “Silk City of India”.
He said that around 12,000 handloom workers in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district depend on this profession for their livelihood.
He stated that the main goal of this exhibition is to provide better market opportunities for these weavers. He also said, “Buying a handloom product means standing by a family.”
More than 100 handloom stalls have been set up at the exhibition. The event will continue until June 8.
